Summary:
Although there is no blueprint for action there are many possible ways to reduce the environmental impacts, such as working in areas of origin to encourage people to stay, in areas of destination to reduce impacts when they do migrate, and at the policy level. Conservationists are often unsure about what steps they can take to reduce the effects of migration on biodiversity. WWF and Conservation International explored the scope of migration's negative impacts on nature and investigated possible solutions.
Human migration is driven by a complex set of "push" and "pull" factors, which conservation organizations need to understand in order to decide whether and how to intervene to reduce the impact on biodiversity. As part of any proposed intervention, it is crucial to assess the potential social impacts because many migrants move not by choice but because of poverty or insecurity.
Successful interventions often involve cross-sector collaboration with development, humanitarian assistance, health and conservation groups working together to address this complex challenge. There are specific interventions in conflict situations.
