Gaza polluted coasts threaten population's health

Palestinian Authority - The Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip has asked the local population to avoid swimming in Mediterranean coastal waters. The government's inability to treat sewage before it is released into the sea has led to a high rate of pollution. Palestinian authorities ascribe the problem to the Israeli blockade. It is believed that any use of coastal waters would lead to major health risks, especially skin diseases.

    SHATI REFUGEE CAMP, Gaza Strip — When a toilet is flushed in Gaza City, the waste sloshes straight into the Mediterranean.
    A yearlong standoff between Israel and Hamas has left the territory's sewage system in a state of collapse, flooding its coastal waters with human waste and blanketing crowded beach-side neighborhoods in a fierce stench.
    The consequences can be deadly. Last year, five people were killed when a small waste reservoir collapsed. This summer, as Gazans head to the beaches, the World Health Organization is warning them to stay out of the sea.
