The IDB, originally configured for a mainframe computer, now runs on a microcomputer. The program requires 40 MB of hard disk storage and about 550K of conventional RAM plus some expanded memory. It is menu driven, allowing the user to customize the information search and output.
The IDB combines data from country sources (especially censuses and surveys) with CIR's estimates and projections to provide information dating back as far as 1950 and as far ahead as 2050. Because the IDB is maintained at CIR as a research tool in response to sponsor requirements, the amount of information available for each country may vary. As funding and research activity permit CIR will update and expand the coverage. The various government agencies, international organizations, and others who sponsor CIR's research program support and benefit from the IDB.
