Activities/Projects:

Principal Investigator Title Start Date Stop Date Purpose
Stephen Couch Jamaica Bay Marsh Islands Restoration 1/1/2003 12/31/2004 Collect the necessary physical, biological and cultural information that is necessary to restore areas of wetlands that have been lost over the years and protect those remaining wetlands which are still present at the location. This includes: surveying, installation of tide and salinity gauges, vegetation mapping, biological benchmarking, low-marsh vegetation test plots, bird surveys, geotech and HTRW sampling and cultural resource investigations.
Robert Will Soil surveys for the Jamaica Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project (JABERP/JABERRT) 1/1/2002 12/31/2002 To learn about characteristics of sub-surface soils in the JABERP/JABERRT sites in Jamaica Bay, as part of the environmental inventory of sites.
Robert Will Geoprobe soil surveys for the Jamaica Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project (JABERP/JABERRT) 8/1/2001 12/31/2001 To learn about characteristics of sub-surface soils in the JABERP/JABERRT sites in Jamaica Bay, as part of the environmental inventory
Robert Will Norton Basin Project in collaboration with JABERRT: Surveys of water quality, fisheries, and physical parameters of bay bottom 6/1/2001 6/30/2002 To learn about biological and physical characteristics of Jamaica Bay, as part of the Norton Basin Project
Robert Will Soil Surveys for the Jamaica Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project (JABERP/JABERRT) 4/17/2001 12/31/2001 To learn about characteristics of soils in the JABERRT sites and elsewhere in Jamaica Bay as part of the JABERRT inventory of sites

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is in the midst of a Jamaica Bay Marsh Islands Ecosystem Restoration project. In order to restore the selected marsh islands to historical functions, the project intends to add substrate material, grade to appropriate marsh elevations, replant native species, utilize multiple approaches to apply to the remaining islands as appropriate, and monitor/evaluate/apply information learned to other islands.
