SPECIAL NOTICE -- Call for Papers at New Education Session Planned for IGARSS '95 A new session planned for IGARSS '95 will emphasize Earth system science educational initiatives. It is being organized and chaired by Dr. Nahid Khazenie of Goddard Space Flight Center's Mission to Planet Earth Office. The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) is the leading professional society in the theory, concepts, and techniques of science and engineering as applied to remote sensing of the Earth. GRSS annually sponsors the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), the premier world conference on this topic. This prestigious meeting has become an international focus of many remote-sensing programs and activities, each year drawing almost 1,000 scientists and engineers from around the world. IGARSS '95 will be the fifteenth of its kind and will be held jointly with the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) at the Congress Center in Florence, Italy, July 10-14, 1995. The theme of IGARSS '95 emphasizes the capability of remote sensing to provide global quantitative data sets for studying and monitoring the Earth's environment. Recognizing the critical importance of education to this area, IGARSS 1995 is adding a program first -- a special session on Earth system science educational initiatives. The theme of IGARSS '95 emphasizes the capability of remote sensing to provide global quantitative data sets for studying and monitoring the Earth's environment. Education papers should be based upon this theme, and can address any level of education, including: grades K-12 (or ages 5-18) through university-level education, and public education efforts. Of particular interest are papers on innovative and effective approaches to interdisciplinary Earth system science education, in the following areas: o Courses and curriculum development o Instructional materials o Teacher training o Educational technologies (e.g., distance learning, software, computer networks, video and videodisks, CD-ROM, etc.) o Informal education (e.g., public education through museum programs, television, newspaper, etc.) LETTER OF INTENT A letter of intent, stating your interest in participating in this session IS REQUESTED BY NOVEMBER 7, 1994. These letters should be submitted to Dr. Nahid Khazenie, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Mission to Planet Earth Office, Code 170, Greenbelt, Maryland 20771; (703) 917-8655 (phone), (703) 917-8656 (FAX), or khazenie@chrpisis.gsfc.nasa.gov (Internet). Letters of intent should be brief notes identifying the author(s), institution, mailing address, phone, FAX, and email address, and a descriptive paper title. Please note that submitting a letter of intent does not substitute for submission of an abstract. GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION Abstracts are due NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 2, 1994 and should be in English and be typed single-spaced on one 8.5 x 11 or A4 page, one side only (not less than 400 words). All abstracts must include: o Preferred topic area (Papers proposed for the IGARSS Education Session should be indicated as "Education") o Name of session organizer (papers proposed for the Education Session, should identify the session organizer as Dr. Nahid Khazenie, NASA GSFC) o Title in capitals o Name of author(s) followed by Affiliation, Mailing Address, Telephone, Fax & E-mail. Please indicate corresponding author if different from first author. o Poster (interactive preference) - recommended for presentations accompanied by numerous images. Abstracts will be used by the Technical Program Committee for selection of papers and composition of the Final Program; hence each abstract should clearly and concisely state the problem addressed, the methodology used, and the central conclusions. ABSTRACTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY DECEMBER 2, 1994. GRSS will accept abstracts via the following means: o Post to the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (address below) o Facsimile (+1-713-291-9224) o E-mail in ASCII text with no attachments (stein@harc.edu) **A copy of the abstract should also be submited to the session chairperson, Dr. Nahid Khazenie (see contact information below). Authors of accepted papers will receive an author's preparation kit in February 1995 for use in preparing their final papers for publication in the conference proceedings, followed by a notice of program placement and an Advance Program in March 1995. Final papers will be due on April 14, 1995. Each presenting author, for both oral and interactive (poster presentations), is limited to presenting no more than three papers and is required to register in advance.
