Remote Sensing and Environmental Treaties Workshop

December 2000

CIESIN's Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) sponsored a workshop on "Remote Sensing and Environmental Treaties: Building More Effective Linkages" on December 4-5, 2000, at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington DC. The workshop brought together approximately 70 experts in remote sensing, environmental treaties, land use, and public policy. The workshop was co-sponsored by MEDIAS-France, the Environmental Change and Security Project of the Wilson Center, and the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

A workshop report is available at the workshop Web site: http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/rs-treaties

The National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change

Fall 2000

The National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change is a landmark in the major ongoing effort to understand what climate change means for the United States. You can download the final approved version of the report of the National Assessment Synthesis Team, which was a federal advisory committee made up of experts drawn from government, universities, industry, and non-governmental organizations.

Metropolitan East Coast Assessment (MEC)

October 2000

The Metropolitan East Coast (MEC) Assessment, one of eighteen regional components of The U.S. National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change has set up a Web site, developed by CIESIN, in support of their efforts. MEC members conducted this study with a goal to understand the impacts of climate change and variability on the physical systems and human activities within the 31 county Metropolitan New York City areas.

US-Mexico Demographic Data Viewer 3.1

September 2000

US-Mexico Demographic Data Viewer 3.1 is an interactive application that provides rapid, interactive data mapping, viewing, and analysis of more than 200 socioeconomic variables that are congruent between the United States and Mexico. A useful tool for browsing and visualizing patterns at geographic levels ranging from regions to counties/municipios, the US-Mexico DDViewer may be used to map population, vital statistic, land area, and household data.

Gridded Population of the World, version 2.0 (GPW)

July 2000

The Gridded Population of the World (GPW) data sets present the distribution of human population converted from national or subnational units to a series of georeferenced quadrilateral grids. Developed in 1999-2000, GPW version 2 incorporates a number of improvements to the original version of this dataset. GPW provides estimates of the population of the world in 1990 and 1995, in terms of both population counts (raw counts) and population densities (per square km). National figures have been reconciled to be consistent with United Nations population estimates for those years; unadjusted data are also available. Both images and data are accessible and downloadable.

New Conservation Dataset Available

July 2000

A new spatial dataset describing Central American vegetation, land cover, and conservation status is now available for downloading via file transfer protocol (ftp) at:

ftp://ftp.ciesin.columbia.edu/pub/data/conservation/PROARCA/

The dataset was developed by PROARCA/CAPAS (Proyecto Ambiental Regional de Centroamerica / Central America Protected Areas Systems) and is being distributed on behalf of The Nature Conservancy. The dataset is in ArcView® 3.0 format.
