Photooxidants, Particles, and Haze across the Arctic and North Atlantic:

A Workshop
Hosted by:
Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)
Columbia University
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
Palisades, New York
Sponsored by: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Environment Canada
In Coordination With: UN/ECE European Monitoring and Evaluation Program (EMEP)
Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP)
Date: June 12-15, 2001

Purpose of the Workshop:

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together international experts from the global and regional atmospheric chemistry communities to assess the current state of knowledge, identify research needs, and improve coordination of research efforts with regard to a series of specific scientific questions of interest to the international environmental policy and research communities:

  • Does the current state of knowledge about the transport of photooxidants and fine particles
    1. across the North Atlantic to and from North America and Europe
    2. into and across the Arctic
allow the calculation of source-receptor relationships between anthropogenic emissions in North America and Europe and concentrations and visibility impacts in North America, Europe, and the Arctic?
  • What are the key uncertainties in these source-receptor relationships?
  • What research activities could help reduce these uncertainties?
